Finding Aids and Slide Shows for Northwestern California Forest Communities Project

Finding Aids and Slideshow for Louisiana Pacific Company/The Hammond Lumber Company Collection. Louisiana Pacific Corporation was one of the largest redwood lumber companies in the world for almost 100 years. The level of documentation in the company records was exceptional, with detailed information on the mill sites, the company towns and field camps, logging operations, property holdings and the extensive network of railroads. Guerra & McBane conducted two phases of processing. In 2006, we identified record groups and created a preliminary finding aid, with related collections interpreted under the theme Northwestern California Forest Communities for a powerpoint developed by Suzanne Guerra, see: http://library.humboldt.edu/humco/holdings/slideshow2/. A set of 125 architectural drawings and maps were selected for digitization, and 84 images were posted on Calisphere https://calisphere.org/search/?q=northwestern+forest+communities. In 2014, all previous inventories were reconciled, final processing and archival storage was completed for the extensive architectural and engineering records, and a comprehensive finding aid was created for the thousands of original documents in this collection. Finding Aid and Slideshow for Tanbark Industry in Southern Humboldt County. Guerra & McBane developed a Finding Aid on the tanbark industry in Southern Humboldt County and then chose a series of photographs from the Swanlund-Baker Photograph Collection in Special Collections at HSU to represent a unique forest community around the Briceland and Mattole part of the county for a slideshow. While the processing of tanbark centered around the oak woodlands, Guerra & McBane utilized a selection of photographs from other collections to demonstrate the impact of this industry extended to other parts of Humboldt County.
