CRM Mitigation Project: Palomar Ballroom Oral History Documentation and Permanent Interpretive Exhibit

Client: iStar Financial Services, San Francisco, CA, 2013-2014..

As partial mitigation for the demolition of the National-Register listed Palomar Ballroom (recognized in 1985 as historically significant to the Mexican American history of California), Guerra & McBane was hired to create an outdoor exhibit based on oral histories and personal archives. We interviewed and scanned images from the personal archives of musicians, club managers, and guests covering a fifty-year period recounted the sounds of the era and the role of the ballroom as a popular venue for community and family events, social gatherings and fundraisers. The collected images were incorporated into the exhibit, while QR codes on the panels provide links to musical history of various eras and related archival collections.
