Furnishing Plan, Surgeon’s Quarters & Population Reconstruction, Bucksport-Fort Humboldt State Historic Park

Client: California Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Eureka, CA., 2011

As part of an update to a 30-year-old interpretive plan, this project put the historic military complex at Humboldt State Historic Park in a larger social context that included the early colonization of Humboldt Bay, migration and immigration during the Gold Rush era, and interactions with native peoples. It showed how immigrants reconstructed the economy and cultural landscape—including architecture—of their home regions. It also focused on the role of the Camp Surgeon and highlighted the status and roles of officers, civilians, domestic servants and townspeople, both immigrant and native born, as well as the domestic life of a military family in an isolated region.
